How I Bring a Design To Life

Hello Reader,

Have you ever noticed that the best creative work rarely starts at the computer?

For me, every design begins with a story.

Sometimes that story starts during a walk through a garden. Other times it's a photograph I've taken, a memory from childhood, or simply noticing the way colors and textures interact in nature. Inspiration often arrives quietly, but learning how to capture and develop it is what transforms an idea into meaningful work.

Recently, I shared a behind-the-scenes look at how I bring a design to life—from gathering inspiration to developing patterns, testing products, and reviewing final samples before production.

Follow me on Instagram or Pinterest, where I tend to show up a bit more than your inbox.

What struck me most while creating that post was realizing how similar the creative process is across disciplines. Whether you're designing textiles, painting, writing, photographing, or building a business, we all begin in the same place: with curiosity.

My process typically looks something like this:

• Collect inspiration from everyday experiences
• Organize ideas and visual references
• Sketch and experiment without judgment
• Refine and edit repeatedly
• Test concepts in real-world applications
• Review, revise, and improve

The finished design is only a small part of the story. The real magic happens in the exploration.

To help you develop your own creative ideas, I've created a simple resource you can download below.

Creative Inspiration Collection Worksheet

Use this worksheet whenever you discover a new idea, photograph, color palette, memory, or visual detail you'd like to develop further. Over time, you'll build a personal library of inspiration that reflects your unique creative voice.

Questions included:
✓ What inspired this idea?
✓ What emotions does it evoke?
✓ What colors stand out?
✓ What textures or materials come to mind?
✓ How could this idea evolve into a project?
✓ What makes this concept uniquely yours?

One of the greatest lessons I've learned as a designer is that creativity isn't about waiting for inspiration to arrive. It's about noticing, collecting, and nurturing it.

I'd love to hear from you.

What has inspired you recently?

Reply and tell me about a photograph, a place, a memory, or a project you're currently exploring. I read every response and genuinely enjoy hearing about your creative journey.

Warmly,
Lori Battaglia

February 24, 2026 Reader Hi friends, In my last newsletter, I shared five unexpected moments from 2025 — and one of them was selling full rights to six of my designs to a home décor company. A few of you replied and asked if I would expand on that decision. So today, I am going to share the experience from how this came about to doing this thing even though I was scared! The opportunity came from attending High Point Market in North Carolina. This show is huge, the reason I wanted to attend...

January 6, 2026 Reader It is 2026 and I am ready to enter into this year with a hopeful attitude! As I look back on this past year, I’m struck by how many beautiful opportunities unfolded that I never could have predicted. They came from showing up, doing the work, and staying open. I hope you do not mind me sharing five things I truly did not see coming in 2025 — and what they reminded me about creative business, faith, and growth. 1.Licensing children’s bedding designs I never imagined...

Hello Reader, I’m thrilled to share a very special project currently unfolding in my studio — "a custom woven fabric", created in collaboration with Kindly Woven, inspired by my client’s roots in beautiful New Orleans. At the center of the design is the beloved fleur-de-lis — but reimagined as a true flower, blooming in an elegant art nouveau style. Rather than staying in its traditional, flat form, this motif now flows with natural movement and grace — just like the spirit of the city it...
