Flickering Lights

Creative Corner - Holiday Series #2

Festive Photography Series Part 2

Hello Reader,

Welcome back to Part 2 of our photography tip series! This week, we’re diving into one of the most magical effects you can achieve with your camera: bokeh (pronounced boh-kay) and shallow depth of field. These techniques are perfect for capturing the beauty of flickering lights, like holiday decorations, candlelit scenes, or cityscapes at night.

Tip 1: Open Up Your Aperture

The key to creating bokeh and a shallow depth of field is using a wide aperture. This means setting your f-stop to a low number, like f/1.8, f/2.8, or f/4. The wider the aperture, the more those background lights will blur into soft, glowing orbs.

📱 iPhone Tip: On iPhones with Portrait mode, switch to it and position your subject close to the lens for an automatic blur effect.

Tip 2: Create Distance Between Your Subject and the Background

The farther your subject is from the flickering lights, the more those lights will blur into beautiful bokeh. Position your subject closer to the camera and let the lights in the background take on that magical softness.

Tip 3: Flickering Lights at Night

To capture beautiful lighting and Christmas decor at night use Night mode on your iPhone camera automatically turns on in low light, but you can also manually turn it on or off. A moon icon in the top left corner of the screen indicates that Night mode is on.

You can adjust the Auto and Max timers by dragging the slider left or right.

February 24, 2026 Reader Hi friends, In my last newsletter, I shared five unexpected moments from 2025 — and one of them was selling full rights to six of my designs to a home décor company. A few of you replied and asked if I would expand on that decision. So today, I am going to share the experience from how this came about to doing this thing even though I was scared! The opportunity came from attending High Point Market in North Carolina. This show is huge, the reason I wanted to attend...

January 6, 2026 Reader It is 2026 and I am ready to enter into this year with a hopeful attitude! As I look back on this past year, I’m struck by how many beautiful opportunities unfolded that I never could have predicted. They came from showing up, doing the work, and staying open. I hope you do not mind me sharing five things I truly did not see coming in 2025 — and what they reminded me about creative business, faith, and growth. 1.Licensing children’s bedding designs I never imagined...

Hello Reader, I’m thrilled to share a very special project currently unfolding in my studio — "a custom woven fabric", created in collaboration with Kindly Woven, inspired by my client’s roots in beautiful New Orleans. At the center of the design is the beloved fleur-de-lis — but reimagined as a true flower, blooming in an elegant art nouveau style. Rather than staying in its traditional, flat form, this motif now flows with natural movement and grace — just like the spirit of the city it...
